“Gone to Texas” is Volume 1 of a six-CD Legacy Collection created to celebrate, disseminate, and honor the Texas folk music of Tim Henderson – a phenomenal songwriter and balladeer whose songs were held in high regard by legendary musicians including Tom Paxton, Allen Damron, Kate Wolf, Stan Rogers, Peter Yarrow, and Townes Van Zandt.
Gathered over the years at festivals, house concerts, bars, and studios, these recordings take us on a journey into the kaleidoscopic world of Tim Henderson – genius, poet, storyteller, seeker, jokester. Our goal has been to help Tim’s songs, tales, and spirit remain — both for those of us who loved him and for new listeners as well.
Tim’s maternal and paternal grandfathers came to west Texas/Mexico from West Virginia for a short time to find work, around 1911. Earl Hagerty was in the military. Karl Henderson was a silver mine guard in Mexico. Tim was always intrigued by their Texas tales, so he was naturally inclined to move to Austin in 1971 to teach and pursue graduate studies at UT. Tim spent the next four decades in his chosen state, eventually composing some of the most brilliant ballads ever written about Texas, it’s land, people, history and culture. Many of these Texas-themed ballads are included here on Volume 1.
